Latinas in crisis

“Latina girls are in crisis, and if we deny it and ignore it, we will doom them with our complacency. Latina teenagers have the highest attempted suicide rate of any adolescent group, the highest teenage pregnancy rate and one of the highest drop out rates, according to researchers.

Of course there are Latina teenagers who are successful in school and happy in life. But too many of our girls are facing obstacles that are relentless and overwhelming, and their feelings of isolation and despair lead them to attempt suicide, usually by cutting themselves or taking pills. And even the most well-adjusted teenagers are subjected to stereotypes and assumptions about being Latina.”
