“There’s more than one campaign in El Paso for this fall — Rick Bolaños is taking on U.S. Rep. Henry Bonilla, in a race most had written off but now gets a bit more interesting after the Supreme Court’s redistricting decision, which requires drawing new boundaries for Congressional District 23.

“For all practical purposes, I’ve hit the lottery. All of a sudden I’m starting to get calls from the DCCC (Democratic Central Coordinating Committee), DNC (Democratic National Committee), and people from as far away as San Diego,” said Bolaños, an El Pasoan who with his Vietnam veteran brothers campaigned for Kerry in 2004. He said he thinks redistricting would add 100,000 voters likely to go Democratic to District 23, and that will help him raise funds in a suddenly more-competitive seat.”
