“ery few attorneys general of the United States have been the subject of biographies. To this short list Austin journalist Bill Minutaglio now adds his study of current Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, though the book concludes just as Gonzales is taking his oath of office. Only a few pages at the end discuss the first year of his tenure.
There are two major problems with “The President’s Counselor.” The first, which is no fault of Minutaglio’s, is that Gonzales is an almost completely opaque subject. The second, for which Minutaglio does bear some responsibility, is that there is no evidence that Gonzales has risen to “power” so much as “prominence.” The two are not the same.”
