“Laura Miller’s announcement that day that she would not run again for mayor took everyone by surprise. She was considered the favorite by many observers who saw her recent work on the Wright amendment and Love Field as one of the high points of her political career.

Her decision has created the opportunity, some believe, for the right kind of Latino candidate with the right kind of political skills to run for mayor and win.

April’s mega-march in downtown Dallas generated intense interest in Latino voter registration and civic involvement. At present, Latinos usually have a voter turnout rate of 10 percent.”
