Bilingual aid at polls contested in Massachusetts
Tagged: bilingual, population“he volatile immigration debate spilled over into the Voting Rights Act reauthorization discussion with a proposed amendment to eliminate bilingual assistance at the polls, said Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., yesterday.
The language assistance provision of the act has never been a point of contention before, but, said Kennedy, “Suddenly, it emerged.”
The amendment, introduced by U.S. Rep. Cliff Stearns, R-Fla., would have abolished language assistance in communities where the non-English speakers of voting age comprise at least 5 percent of the total voting age population. It was defeated last week.”
