“In a study released by the National Association of Latino Elected Officials, there were 5,132 Hispanics in elected office at the start of this year, a 37 percent increase from 1996.
The study went on to find that Latino elected officials now hold office in 43 states. Twenty-five Latinos serve in Congress and seven are statewide officials.
Ten years ago, there were no Hispanic U.S. Senators and now there are three: Republican Mel Martinez of Florida, and Democrats Ken Salazar of Colorado and Bob Menendez of New Jersey.”
