Knowledge is Power!

“It was 1980 in Guatemala, a time of guerrilla warfare against the military juntas. For Roberto F., then a young man in a hill town near Honduras, they were “really, really bad times.”

He wanted to attend community college, but to be a student was to raise suspicions of Communist sympathies. He wanted to work, but could not find a job.

Then a friend persuaded Roberto to try his hand up north, in the United States. “Maybe you’re going to make it there,” the friend said. After 10 days in the friend’s car, turned back twice at the border, Roberto convinced a border guard he was a student, and they made it into California.”
