Knowledge is Power!

“Dulce Carter learned to speak Spanish growing up in Mexico. When she joined the county police department last year, the 23-year-old was surprised to find out she would be the only Hispanic employee there.

Some of her colleagues do speak some Spanish, but English is their first language, a distinction that can be important when dealing with monolingual Spanish speakers. Officials say the makeup of the police department reflects Gaston County’s population, which is 3 percent Hispanic, according to the most recent census figures. But they are always looking to hire more minorities like Carter.”
