“Hispanic women are often stereotyped but seldom studied, especially on issues of family and sexuality.

A high-profile international group hopes to change that, and has made South Florida the U.S. focus of an international look at substance abuse, domestic violence and risky sexual practices affecting Hispanic women. Similar research will be done at universities in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Honduras and Venezuela.

Conventional wisdom paints Hispanic men full of machismo, while women are expected to emulate the Virgin Mary, said Rosa Gonzalez, a doctoral student working on the study.”
