Peek at a subculture, without stereotypes. The movie ‘Wassup Rockers’

Tagged: , ,

“The film is problematic, particularly during its increasingly outlandish third act, but it does a decent job capturing an inner city subculture. A companion piece to last year’s dance documentary “Rize,” the movie centers on Latino teens who express themselves playing punk music and performing brazen skate stunts.

At school, where hip-hop is the predominant style, the characters go against the grain with long hair and tight jeans. They aren’t exactly straight-edge — we see them drinking malt liquor and flirting with trashy girls — but essentially they’re good kids in bleak surroundings. The clique is led by Jonathan (Jonathan Velasquez), Kico (Francisco Pedrasa) and Milton (Milton Velasquez).”
