“If a major hurricane hits Long Island this year, it isn’t just the coastline that will have changed vastly since Gloria hit in 1985. The non-English-speaking population of Nassau and Suffolk has exploded, and both counties have to face that reality as they prepare their emergency plans.

Nearly a half-million Long Islanders are foreign-born, most of them Hispanic. To assure that those people get help during a major storm, both counties have updated their plans.”
