In the Bronx, girls rule. New York

“Latina girls are having babies at an alarming rate. Statistics from the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene show that in 2004 alone, there were 4,813 live births to Latina teenagers in the city, compared to 2,981 for blacks and 650 for whites.

So to the girls of PS 218 in the South Bronx who circulated a petition demanding sex education classes, we say, “Well done!” A story in The New York Post reported that several of the girls, who are 12 and 13-years-old, said they already know a teenager who has had a baby. The girls know what they`re talking about, and this is a situation where adults need to listen and learn.”
