“Some North Charleston Hispanic Communities are becoming easy targets for criminals. As the number of Hispanics living in the Lowcountry grows, so does the crime against them and many of the victims aren’t reporting their victimization. More than 7,000 hispanics are living in the North Charleston. It’s a growing number criminals are targeting with robberies and assaults. In just one day last week, there were six robberies in one local hispanic neighborhood. “I feel the Spanish get a lot of discrimination and people they think they’re ignorant, but a lot of them are coming here to work hard for your family,” says Calixto Bostos Vasquez. He agrees his community has become an easy target for violence. He says the language barrier is just one of the many reasons, many hispanics aren’t comfortable going to police and aren’t able to protect themselves from becoming victims. The North Charleston Police Department’s Victim Assistance Unit is trying to make things easier. “I don’t think they are fearful, I think they just don’t know what we can do for them,” says Miriam Walker, Victim’s Advocate for N. Charleston P.D. “
