“A trip to the beach or lake is often the focus of a summer day’s fun. But it can end tragically as well when swimmers overestimate their skill _ and statistics show that some minority groups in North Carolina are at greater risk of drowning.

Federal statistics show the rate of drowning for Hispanic people in North Carolina was second among states between 1999 and 2003, and almost two-and-a-half times the rate at which white people drowned. Blacks drowned at almost twice the rate of whites.”
