Grocer’s key to Hispanic shoppers: Never leave space empty
“The shelves in Super Exito Supermarket are packed like a rush-hour subway car and arranged as precisely as a chessboard.
There are eight aisles of 56-foot-long shelves, and not an inch is wasted. In one aisle, bags of Goya beans are stacked from top to bottom — green split peas, yellow split peas, lentils, golden hominy, white hominy, great white, yellow popcorn. The sacks sit on the edge of the shelf, as though ready to jump.
To select a can of soup, a customer must place his or her finger on top of the can and tip it forward. There is no room to shimmy a digit around the side.”
