Don’t build a Rio Grande Wall

“Republicans in the House of Representatives have discovered undocumented aliens in America, 12 million of them (perhaps more). Removing them is suddenly a national emergency. But the infrastructure of undocumented aliens, most of them workers, can’t be easily dismantled. Undocumented workers in our country are the economic engines of countless communities and industries. Like our dependence on oil, the nation is hooked on cheap labor.

The Republican House crackdown on illegal immigrants focuses squarely on the Southern frontier. The right wing wants undocumented people deported as felons. The implications are staggering. Deporting every single undocumented person would grind immigration enforcement to a halt. If felons or deportees get caught trying to illegally cross the border again, they will have to serve time in federal penitentiaries. That means building more detention camps and penitentiaries.”
