Determination fuels Latina’s desire to skate
“When Isela Mendoza was an aspiring figure skater in Long Beach, Calif., a coach tried to dissuade her from skating, saying she would never amount to much on the ice because of her skin color.
Those comments only fueled the now 16-year-old Maryvale resident’s passion for the sport.
Mendoza continues to train and practice to accomplish her dreams: to one day compete in the U.S. National Figure Skating Championships and the Olympics. “
