“South Carolina and other Atlantic coast states will not be required to send their National Guard to the Mexican border, so they can ensure they have enough Guardsmen on hand should a hurricane strike.

A specific agreement has not been signed, but Lt. Gen. H. Steven Blum, National Guard bureau chief, told the House Armed Services Committee that border duties will not hinder the National Guard’s response to natural disasters.

“Governors will retain sufficient National Guard capability to accomplish state missions to include disaster preparations,” Blum said last week.”
