“With Congress considering two major immigration-reform bills, Latino advocacy groups and both major political parties are carefully watching to see how many Latinos register before —- and turn out in —- next week’s elections.

The legislation has generated extensive debate and coverage in both English- and Spanish-language media since late last year. Attention has built in recent weeks, as thousands of immigrants —- particularly Latinos —- have filled the streets of many cities to speak out on the legislation. Protesters generally have, for example, condemned a bill passed by the House of Representatives, which calls for crackdowns on illegal immigration.

Latino leaders say they’ve noticed more Hispanic citizens registering to vote than in previous elections, though reliable statistics won’t be available until summer.”
