“Maria Jimenez, a mother of three, pushes ahead or pulls behind a baby buggy as she winds her way through the narrow aisles at Culebra Meat Market No. 1.

A transplant from Querétaro, Mexico, her buying preferences make her the demographic ideal for what drives growth at this San Antonio-based chain. Jimenez, 33, is the multitasking, harried Hispanic homemaker.

“I fulfill my errands here,” says Jimenez as she leaves the cash register. “They have brands from Mexico. It’s almost exactly the same, even the prices.”"
