“Movies by a favored Spanish veteran and three rising Latin American directors were among key nominees for prizes as the Cannes Film Festival prepared to wrap up Sunday. Among front-runners for the 12-day festival’s key honor, the Palme d’Or, was Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodovar’s “Volver,” starring Penelope Cruz in a comic drama about women making do without men.
Volver is one of the most viable films in the competition, and stars Penelope Cruz as a hardworking woman who encounters what appears to be her mother’s ghost looking to lay to rest the quarrels of the past.”
