“With auteurs from Spain and Mexico having garnered the most applause and appreciative hallway commentary so far, handicappers are predicting that this year’s Palme d’Or will go to a Spanish-language film for the first time in nearly a half-century.
Not since Luis Buñuel’s “Viridiana” in 1961 has a Spanish or Latin American film won the top Cannes prize, but that drought could end this year given the near-unanimous acclaim for Spanish director Pedro Almodovar’s “Volver” (Return) and Mexican filmmaker Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu’s “Babel.”"
