“Landmark legislation to reform the nation’s failed immigration laws passed overwhelmingly Thursday in the Senate, where lawmakers turned toward a looming showdown with the House over border security and citizenship.
A bipartisan coalition gave the bill momentum in the Senate, which voted 62-36 to pass the legislation that would grant legal status and citizenship for 10 million undocumented immigrants in this country and set up a guest-worker program.
“These people have come for the same reason immigrants have always come to America. They came to grasp the lowest rung of the ladder, and they intend to rise. Let them rise,” said Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., a chief architect of the legislation”
