Spanish-only Texas town backs English-only anthem

“EL CENIZO - A Spanish-only ordinance in 1999 may have put this Mexican border town on the map, but residents and officials here are squarely behind the push for English to be the language of choice for Americans.

“I think every country has something sacred, which is their flag and their national anthem,” Raul Reyes, the city’s 22-year-old mayor, said in response to the promotion of a Spanish version of The Star-Spangled Banner.

“I wouldn’t go getting Mexico’s flag and coloring it red, white, and blue,” he said.”
