“A temporary consulate distributed hundreds of new passports and identification cards to mostly undocumented Mexicans, allowing then to obtain official papers – even if issued by a foreign government.

Mexico’s Chicago Consulate established the temporary consulate over three days last week at an Ivy Tech Community College campus. It drew more than 600 Mexican citizens the first two days and hundreds more were expected Saturday.

Mexican government officials estimate more than 2 million Mexican citizens live in the Chicago area, said Consul Julio Huerta. His office periodically dispatches a mobile office to heavily Hispanic communities in Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin.”
