“Chimayó red. A chile by any other name just isn’t as sweet. But when “outsiders” came to this small mountain town and tried to trademark its heritage crop, locals were disgruntled. On Wednesday, about 50 people who are more steeped in the ways of the land than trademark law decided they would seek their own legal protection for the name of their chile.
“We could find ourselves at the losing end of an argument because of a piece of paper,” said Miguel Santistevan , a local ecologist who has farmed Chimayó Chile peppers. “And it’s the same thing that happened to our ancestors.””
