“Last Wednesday, the acclaimed Colombian American singer-songwriter Soraya died of breast cancer in Miami. She was 37 years old and renowned for impassioned, inspirational songs. It was a sad end to a gifted talent who was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer six years ago and fought to raise awareness in the Spanish-speaking community for a cure and prevention.

“Eleven million women a year get this disease and 45 percent don’t have to die. You have to educate. People need a face for their message, so I’ll be that face,” she said in San Jose in 2001 prior to receiving an award from Las Isabelas, a South Bay nonprofit organization that provides support for Latinas with various forms of cancer, especially breast cancer. She collected millions of dollars in contributions, representing the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation as well as the American Cancer Society.”
