“Some Latinos living in South Carolina say President Bush’s plan to use thousands of National Guard troops to help watch the 2,000-mile border between the United States and Mexico didn’t sound as bad as they had feared.
The president, in a speech to the nation Monday night, proposed using the troops in a support role until the ranks of the Border Patrol can be built up.
Brenda Garcia, 25, a legal resident from Mexico, said she was not entirely opposed to the plan because of the president’s assurances that the military would not be involved in policing activities. “It’s kind of drastic,” she said.”
