“The president is sending National Guard troops to the border rather than increasing the number of Border Patrol and ICE agents.

Meanwhile, Isacson notes that the Pentagon is increasingly involved in foreign aid, a role that should go to the State Department and USAID. In Iraq, the military continues to handle the vast majority of reconstruction activities, activities which should probably not fall under the military’s mandate, but that they still do fairly well.

The military is one of the most agile and capable parts of the US government today. When tasked with a mission, they take action to complete it. However, this does not mean that they should be used for every activity the government undertakes. Under that logic, why not put the military in charge of the IRS? Or Medicare? Would 435 generals and colonels get more done than the current Congress?”
