Sleeping giant of American politics continues its siesta

“The day after one of the big pro-immigrant marches, a woman sat on a bench chatting about the event on her cell phone. She was recapping in Spanish, but switched to English to quote its key slogan: “Today we march, tomorrow we vote.”

Many commentators have taken the marchers at their word, believing that the congressional debate over immigration has finally roused Latinos to become more engaged in the political process. But there’s reason to suspect that Latinos — long considered the “sleeping giant” of American politics — may yet continue to slumber.”
