Editorial: The story’s silver lining. Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Tagged: population, student“To tour the La Causa charter school, much of whose student body is immigrant or has immediate immigrant roots, is to experience the promise inherent in the explosive growth of the Latino population.
But the school is also a reminder of the danger of the flip side: Potential untapped can be potential wasted.
La Causa’s school on Milwaukee’s south side offers a model of potential that is both nurtured and tapped. The school illustrates how the nation can and should react to the latest news from the U.S. Census Bureau that the growth of the Latino population in the United States accounted for nearly half the country’s total growth of 2.8 million last year. And, just as important, news that immigration accounted for nearly 40% of the total 1.3 million in Latino growth.”
