Teen becomes quinceaera planner. Business idea wins national youth entrepreneur award.

“The pressures of helping take care of her very sick father almost prompted Annie Torres to drop out of high school during her junior year.

Now, not only is she a high school graduate, the 18-year-old Redwood City resident is founder and president of a business that helps 15-year-old Latinas choreograph the traditional waltz for a coming-of-age celebration.

Torres’ “Annie’s Vals” helps girls plan dances for their quinceaeras. Her inspiration came from her own quinceaera and helping friends and relatives plan their “vals” ”” waltz in Spanish. The idea was the result of a business proposal for her economics class at Redwood High School ”” an alternative school for struggling students in the Sequoia Union High School District.”
