“Juan Mendez, an AIDS activist and an entertainment writer for many Latino publications in the city, including El Daily News, died Tuesday at his home in Chelsea. He was 41.

The cause of death wasn’t immediately clear but it was likely heart failure, his family said.

A native of San Juan, Puerto Rico, Mendez moved to the city to attend college in 1988, a time when thousands of New Yorkers were losing their lives to AIDS.”
