“Hispanic families spend an average of $3,000 to $10,000 on a daughter’s quinceanera and invite more than 300 guests, according to Latina magazine. Spawned in the Great Depression, the quinceanera is a blend of debutante ball and religious celebration imbued with deep emotion in Central and South American countries as well as in the United States.
Quinceanera, pronounced “keen-sin-era,” translates literally as “15th birthday girl.” It marks a girl’s passage into adulthood and begins with a Mass. The girl is escorted into church by well-dressed young men and women. Her family then hosts an evening party with food, champagne or wine, decorations, music and gifts.”
