Immigrants make their point, cutting work and classes in New Jersey

“Flores Car Wash on Sip Avenue in Jersey City, normally bustling with activity, was a ghostland Monday. Several shops along Bergenline Avenue in West New York were shuttered, and some construction sites were without workers. Absenteeism in the 96 percent-Latino Union City school district was nine times greater than usual.

Thousands of legal and illegal immigrants from across Hudson County participated this week in the nationwide “Day Without Immigrants,” a protest against proposed changes to the nation’s immigration policies.”
