“Buoyed by recent demonstrations and a newfound sense of solidarity, many Hispanics in Alabama were planning to shut down businesses, stay home from work and keep their children home from school Monday as part of a national immigration protest.

With a Spanish-speaking population the Census Bureau estimates at 98,388 in Alabama ”” a number almost universally considered to be ridiculously low ”” participants said they wanted to show the economic power of immigrants who have moved to the state in recent years.”
