“The sign at the entrance to Sandburg Elementary welcomes students, staff and visitors to the school in 16 languages. A gift from last year’s class of departing 5th graders, the sign is a tangible symbol that the north-side school is home to students from many lands and cultures.

In fact, in just over a decade, Sandburg’s minority population has climbed from 18.5 percent to 54 percent of the school’s total enrollment of 296 students. Most dramatically, since 2000, the school’s Hispanic student population has grown from just 3 percent to 25 percent. Meanwhile, its Asian and African-American populations have doubled.”
