“However, Latinos who have come here are still talking with an accent. Compare the Latinos who came here during the 1950s; I have many friends who came here when they were children and they speak perfect English and Spanish or no Spanish at all. The difference, I believe, is how the schools educated the students, what the government expected from the parents and how the stores catered to the clientele. It comes down to one thing they had to learn: English. When you speak with Russian and Asian immigrants, you do not find the same problems; they speak English and succeed in school. Trust me, it isn’t because the Latinos are not intelligent people.
I have lived the immigrant experiences, I had children coping with new schools, different languages, cultures and discrimination; it is hard! I can’t tell you how often I heard after living in Mexico for just six months, “What, you don’t speak Spanish yet?”"
