“Building upon six weeks of huge demonstrations, immigrant-rights organizers and Spanish-language radio DJs are urging supporters to take action on May 1 — whether it be staying home from work, joining a march or not spending any money — showing the movement’s ability to appeal to grassroots activists while not alienating lawmakers in Washington.

Several weeks ago, immigrant leaders who helped bring attention to legislation that could deport or criminalize millions of undocumented immigrants called for a National Day Without Immigrants general strike and boycott on May 1, long a workers’ rights holiday across Latin America. But as politicians like Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and church leaders suggested a less radical political approach — and as janitors and other low-wage workers feared that they might lose their jobs if they walked out — the movement shifted course.”
