“Kansas City’s Hispanic population is growing, but the number of Hispanic police commanders is not.

That’s something Police Chief Jim Corwin wants to change. He plans to meet in the next two weeks with his department’s Latino Police Officers Association to spark interest in the promotional process and find ways to better prepare Hispanic officers.

The issue arose at the Board of Police Commissioners meeting Tuesday when a Hispanic community leader told board members she was concerned about the lack of Hispanic commanders. Only one Hispanic has been promoted into the commander ranks since 1994.”
