“Republican Gov. Pete Wilson’s successful re-election strategy in 1994 taught two very different lessons about the use of illegal immigration as a wedge issue in a political campaign: short-term gains for the party that uses it, long-term gains for the other guys.

As the nation moves toward the 2006 elections, history may well repeat itself, only on a bigger stage. In a year when Republicans are struggling to retain control of Congress, illegal immigration, in the words of Peter Hart, the respected Democratic pollster, “is the hidden hot button issue for 2006.” Although most Republicans are well aware of the possible backlash among Latino voters, said Hart in Berkeley, Calif., last week, they won’t be able to “resist picking up that poker” again.”
