“On Sunday a vicious rumor started circulating that the Immigration and Naturalization Service was in Madison arresting Latino workers at their jobs. Although this turned out to be a hoax, many of these families chose to stay home on Monday and keep their children with them for fear that they might even be taken from school by the authorities. Those children who were in school spent the day preoccupied and scared, and some were on the verge of tears.

As an employee of the Madison School District, I work daily with Latino children. Witnessing firsthand the terror these children have suffered as a result of someone’s cruel joke is what prompted me to write this. Many of the Latino children in our school district were born in the U.S. and are, therefore, citizens. Those who are not often have siblings who are.”
