“For years, as the influx of Latino immigrants surged in cities throughout the country, Pittsburgh remained strangely unaffected. It became known as one of the few areas without a significant Latino population.
But that is changing.
“It’s come late to Pittsburgh, but the demographics are here,” said Father Daniele Vallecorsa, chaplain for the diocese’s Latino Catholic Community.
He quoted census figures estimating 15,000 Hispanics living within the diocese as of 2000. Today that number, conservatively, is thought to top 20,000.”
