“The immigration protests of the past few weeks have been the subject of many a news story, column, blog entry and letter to the editor.

Pundits pointed to placard-hoisting, flag-waving crowds as evidence of the issue’s undeniable significance. For many of those marching, it marked a foray into the world of civic participation.

But there’s a flip side to the unified voz so many have proclaimed as evidence of the “sleeping giant’s re-awakening” (a tired aphorism if there ever was one).

It’s the “barrio-ization” of awareness.”
