“Researchers at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles report that contraception with depo-medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) is associated with an increase in the risk of diabetes in some Latino women with prior pregnancy-related or gestational diabetes.

The investigators ran an observational study of 526 Hispanic women with prior gestational diabetes mellitus who were not diabetic at their postpartum visit from January 1987 to October 1997. Ninety-six of the women elected for DMPA, while 430 chose combination oral contraceptives (COCs) as initial contraception. They were followed for a maximum of slightly more than nine years, with a median followup of about 12 months. Oral glucose tolerance tests were performed and choice of contraception method was recorded at each visit.”
