English-only proposal overlooks the reality in Ohio

“In all the uproar over the status of the nation’s 11 million illegal immigrants, perhaps you missed the introduction of House Bill 553. It’s called the Ohio English Unity Act, and it’s designed to make English the official language in Ohio.

Now, there’s an emergency requiring immediate legislative action, with such a glut of Americans becoming multilingual and all. Never mind that President Bush considers it such a high-priority national security issue that he has proposed investing $114 million to bolster American’s foreign-language skills. Here in Ohio, some state legislators apparently are terrified that anybody might speak more than one language.”
