“For nearly 40 years, this man, Cali Rivera, has been making drums and bells in his shop, JCR Percussion Instruments, on Ogden Avenue in the Highbridge section of the Bronx. One of the last American craftsmen in the business ”” most instruments are now made in factories abroad ”” he sells his pieces through chains like Sam Ash and Guitar Center, but some musicians go straight to the source.

They may not be doing so for long. On April 5, despite vocal protest from some neighborhood residents, the City Council voted nearly unanimously to authorize plans for a new Yankee Stadium. The $800 million project will involve rebuilding the stadium on parkland across the street from the old ballpark, just a few minutes’ walk from Mr. Rivera’s shop.”
