“Ostensibly, it’s all about illegal immigration. The legislation so hotly debated is about people here illegally, and only about them.

But the current national obsession goes far beyond bills to deport ‘em or let ‘em stay. What everybody wants to know is what Hispanics — legal or illegal, no matter — are up to.

Hispanics have lived in what is now Florida and the Southwest since before the Pilgrims landed. Millions have arrived in the past quarter-century, enough that by the early 1990s Americans were screaming at each other about immigrants. Now, hundreds of thousands of immigrants marching in dozens of cities has reached a sort of Latino critical mass — and reignited the arguments.”
