“Malin Alegria never had a big, fufu rufu quinceañera, with the gaudy dresses, low-rider cars and mariachis.

In that way, she is the opposite of Estrella Alvarez, the fictional character in Alegria’s new book.

Growing up in San Francisco’s Mission District as a combat-boot-stomping, punk-rock non-conformist, Alegria, 32, was not the type to get caught up in hype of formal Mexican celebrations. The Chicana writer — whose parents are Mexican-American — was also far removed from the East San Jose barrio she vividly captures in her debut book, “Estrella’s Quinceañera.”"
