Jalesia F. “Jasha” McQueen, an attorney with the law firm of Gallop, Johnson & Neuman in St. Louis, has been appointed a member of the Missouri Hispanic Business, Trade and Culture Commission created last October by Missouri Governor Matt Blunt.
Ms. McQueen, age 34, is an associate in Gallop, Johnson & Neuman’s Governmental Law Department who deals with clients in areas of immigration and governmental affairs. She also is experienced in areas of commercial litigation, product liability, biotechnology, construction, environmental law and international law.
Missouri Governor Matt Blunt signed executive order 05-43 in October 2005 creating the Hispanic Business, Trade and Culture Commission to address the needs of Missouri’s growing Hispanic business community. In 2004, Missouri’s estimated Hispanic population was 148,201, up from 118,617 in 2000, according to the Missouri Census Data Center. Ms. McQueen was appointed to the Commission by Gregory A. Steinhoff, Director of Missouri’s Department of Economic Development.
The Commission advises the Missouri Department of Economic Development Office of International Trade and Investment on issues important to Missouri’s Hispanic community. The group is a clearing house on matters concerning economic development for Hispanic businesses, monitors legislative issues relevant to the Hispanic community and recommends proposed legislation to the Department.
Fluent in Spanish, Ms. McQueen is licensed to practice law in Missouri and Illinois and she is admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court for Eastern Missouri. Before graduating cum laude with a Juris Doctor degree from Southern Illinois University School of Law, she served as a Captain in the U.S. Army. Ms. McQueen earned a M.S. degree in Human Resource Management from Troy State University and a B.A. in Communications magna cum laude from the University of Tampa.
Earlier this year, she was appointed secretary of the Land Clearance for Redevelopment Authority of St. Louis County (LCRA), a division of the St. Louis County Economic Council, by County Executive Charlie Dooley. The LCRA was established per state statute to eliminate and prevent blight in St. Louis County, and is authorized to prepare redevelopment plans, contract for services for such projects and to acquire property and prepare it for redevelopment.
Ms. McQueen also was selected to participate in “Leadership Clayton,” a nine-month program administered by the Clayton Chamber of Commerce to inform and nurture young leaders. Participants attend monthly classes to study local issues and meet with leaders in government, business, education and not-for-profit sectors so they can prepare for community leadership.
Ms. McQueen is a member of The Missouri Bar, the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis, the American Bar Association, the Illinois State Bar Association and the American Immigration Lawyers Association.
